Mabel McIlvaine papers

 Collection
Identifier: CSC-0034

Scope and Contents

The Mabel McIlvane papers contain two manuscripts, five letters, and one newspaper clipping. The manuscripts are in Mabel McIlvaine's hand and are texts of her lectures on bookbinding, one an historical overview delivered to the West End Women's Club, and one titled "The New Movement in Bookbinding," delivered to the alumnae of the University of Chicago on January 12, 1901. The five letters were written to McIlvaine in New York and Florence, Italy, by Octave Uzanne during 1906 and 1907. They focus on Uzanne's ideas for an "historical and documentary study of the illustration of books, from the 14th to the 17th century," which he hoped would be published by the Grolier Club in New York; Uzanne asked for advice and intercession on his behalf. The newspaper clipping mentions McIlvaine's translation of Uzanne's work on French bookbinders of the eighteenth century, published by the Caxton Club of Chicago in 1904.
