Scope and Contents

The Ken Hiebert collection is divided into four series. Series I. Biographical contains resume and CVs, correspondence, and his own education in the Basel School. Series II. Teaching Career contains syllabi and coursework from courses taught by Hiebert, comprising exercises done by his students at Carnegie Mellon, PCA/UArts, and others, many of which are in the form of design books. Series III. Design Work spans his career as a designer for independent clients. This includes his two books, "Graphic Design Processes" and "Graphic Design Sources." Series IV. Independent Design Explorrations includes his work in fields of design and photography, such as his "Stonehenge" series.

Biographical / Historical

Ken Hiebert was born in Mt. Lake, Minnesota in 1930. He lived in Basel, Switzerland from 1954 to 1964, and studied at Allgemeine Gewerbeschule from 1959-1964. That year, he returned to the United States and became faculty at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburg, where he remained for two years. In 1966 he became faculty at PCA, University of the Arts (UArts) in Philadelphia. In spring of 1973, he was visiting faculty at Yale University. In 1999, he retired from UArts, and in spring of 2001 became visiting faculty at Carnegie Mellon. As of 2017, Ken Hiebert resides in Gwynned, Pennsylvania. [adapted from the original inventory]

Overview

To preserve documents that clarify a progression leading to and ensuing from appointment to start a pioneering program in graphic design at the University of the Arts (then Philadelphia College of Art) in 1966. Key facets of the perception-based and essentially non-verbal graphic design program of the Basel School of Design (then called Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel) were integrated with the liberal arts approach to BFA education at this independent arts college in the U.S. -- From original inventory
