Scope and Contents

This collection contains documentation of the memorial service held at NTID for Clayton Valli in 2003. The black and white photographs feature images of presenters at the memorial service as well as the audience. The VHS tape contains a tribute to Valli with the following information on the label "HANDS for Clayton Valli: A Tribute, NTID uncap, K Christie, 5/22/2003, 40:00"

Biographical / Historical

Clayton L. Valli (1951-2003) was an ASL poet and linguist. He attended NTID to study Photography, and earned a master's degree in linguistics from Gallaudet University. He was also the first person to earn a doctorate in Linguistics and ASL Poetics from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a scholar, a lecturer, and a teacher. Valli was particularly well known as a poet, with works such as "Hands" and "Dandelions" being quite well-known. Valli died from complications of AIDS.
