Biographical / Historical

The Sapphires were a deaf women's softball team, sponsored in part by Deaf Women of Rochester, which existed from the late 1980s through the late 2000s. They were coached by Wendy Dannels, a member of the Instructional/Support Faculty at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and played in a number of local, regional, and national tournaments over the course of the team's existence. In 2009, Rochester School for the Deaf, in partnership with Bausch + Lomb, created its first and only FIRST Robotics team, RoboComm-X Team 3162. FIRST Robotics is an international high school robotics competition, during which teams of high school students and their mentors work for six weeks on a robot designed to complete simple tasks and play games. Co-led by Gary Behm (Director, Center for Access Technology, RIT), Wendy Dannels, and Joseph Stanislow (Instructional/Support Faculty, NTID), the team and their robot competed in the 2010 Finger Lakes Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, held at RIT's Gordon Field House and Activities Center
