Biographical / Historical

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) was founded in 1914 as a professional association for designers. A national organization, AIGA began allowing individual chapters to form throughout the U.S. during the 1980s, drastically increasing its membership. Although there was originally a Rochester chapter, it appears to have merged with the Upstate NY chapter during the late 1990s. According to a Rochester chapter newsletter from 1993, the purpose of the organization was to:

Advance excellence in graphic design as a discipline, profession, and cultural force. The AIGA provide leadership in the exchange of ideas and information, the encouragement of critical analysis and research, and the advancement of education and ethical practice.

The Rochester Institute of Technology also formed its own student group. One of the few student groups affiliated with a professional organization, the AIGA RIT Student Group "helps students network and find jobs upon graduation at RIT." In addition to helping students network with one another, the club brings in various speakers and sponsors events related to the field of design.
