Scope and Contents

The Oral interpreting/transliterating materials collection contains books, notebooks, newsletters, brochures, VHS tapes, and DVDs related to training oral interpreters of the deaf for deaf people who prefer oral means of communication and do not use sign language. The collection includes information about the history/philosophy of oralism, the history of oral interpreter/transliterators, and the Alexander Graham Bell Association of the Deaf, an oral Deaf interest group. The DVDs include oral transliterator models, oral transliterating expressive practice, voice over practice, and interactive practice.

Biographical / Historical

The Department of Access Services at RIT provides interpreting, notetaking, and real-time captioning services to the RIT community. Their goal is to provide the highest possible quality of access to communication. The department enables more than 650 deaf and hard-of-hearing RIT students to register and fully participate in roughly 23,000 credit hours annually in more than 200 highly competitive academic programs.
