Scope and Contents

The NTID Student Congress (NSC) records includes meeting minutes, publications, club information, deaf community awareness and events that have been sponsored by the NSC. Together these items help to show the impact the NSC has had at NTID and RIT campus. The bulk of the NSC collection is meeting minutes from the NSC Executive Board meetings and general meetings. The dates of the Executive Board meeting minutes range from 1974-1989 and 1995-1999. General meeting minutes range from 1980-2000, 2006-2007 and 2011-2012. The bulk of the general meeting minutes take place in the 1990s. Another group of records contains information pertaining to NTID clubs, events, and organizations from 1983-2007. Publications in the collection consist of The Observing Eye, NSC The View from 2002-2003, Eagle’s Eye and the NTID Creative Arts Magazine from 1997. Deaf community related information ranges from meeting minutes and information of NTID Dean’s Student Leadership Advisory Group (DSLAG), Empire State Association of the Deaf (ESAD), Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), American Athletic Association of the Deaf (AAAD) and Eastern Athletic Association of the Deaf (EAAD) organizations as well as newspaper clippings and letters of solidarity in regards to the Gallaudet Protest in 1988 and the Lexington Protest in 1994. The six photographs in the collection are unlabeled and are very pixelated. In the last box of the collection there are videotapes, digital video cassettes, CDs and a floppy disk the contents of which provides some insight into various meetings and projects as well as “A Year in Review” from 2006-2007.

Added to the collection are three envelopes of unidentified photographs, records on Student Television Network, student clubs, Student Directorate minutes and correspondence, Miss NTID pageant - 1988-1992, yearbook and graduation photographs, Student Life Advisory Board correspondence and minutes - 1986-1993, and Hound Pound interpreting group. The bulk of these records are from 1981- 2000.

Historical Information: NTID Student Congress

The National Technical Institute for the Deaf opened its doors at RIT with the first group of students starting in 1968. RIT competed with eight other colleges to have NTID become part of the RIT campus. NTID was the first technical college in the U.S. for the deaf. The NTID Student Congress (NSC) was established in 1971 and represents the deaf and hard of hearing students in the RIT community. NSC also oversees all the deaf organizations and events at NTID.

Meeting minutes, club information, events information, deaf community related materials, photographs and media pertaining to the NTID Student Congress from 1974 to 2015.

Arrangement

The collection is filed by series in the original 9 boxes. The first series containing the Executive Board meeting minutes and the general meeting minutes are arranged chronologically. The remainder of the collection is filed by name of the organization or event. The five series that make up this collection are governance records, NSC clubs and publications, organizations and Deaf Community related material, NSC events and miscellaneous documents and media.

The second accession of records received (2014:055) are not organized by series nor are they in chronological order. There are three envelopes of unidentified photographs in no particular order. The five boxes are loosely arranged by subject.
