Scope and Contents

Emily Smith drawings contains 17 pencil drawings, mainly depicting pastoral scenes of farms, country homes, trees, animals, and landscapes. In a 1952 letter acknowledging the gift of the drawings, RIT President Mark Ellingson wrote, "The pencil landscape sketches have a delicate quality with very good delineation of tree forms and foliage. The animal studies are very well drawn, and the crayon pencil drawings of the cows are exceptionally good." The Ellingson letter is included in the collection.

Biographical / Historical

Emily Smith was a Rochester artist active in the mid-1800s. Her artist studio was in the historic Reynolds Arcade in downtown Rochester (next to artist Grove Gilbert). The Rochester Historical Society owns a painting by Smith: Skating on the Genesee.
