Biographical / Historical

Established in Dubrovnik 1997, RIT Croatia (formerly called the American College of Management and Technology (ACMT) initially offered a four year undergraduate program in international hospitality and service management. Faculty from RIT’s School of Hospitality and Service Management regularly spent full quarters teaching in Croatia.

The Croatian government, looking to rebuild following the devastating 1991-1995 civil war resulting from the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia, approached RIT about opening a school with an American model of education. “When two members of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Technology visited RIT in the mid ’90s, we assumed they would be most interested in our programs in information technology, telecommunications or engineering technology,” says Stanley McKenzie, former RIT provost. “At the end of their visit, to our surprise, we were informed the quickest jump start to the Croatian economy would be in tourism management, since the Dalmatian Coast had been the prime vacation spot for south-central Europe before the war in the Balkans.” http://www.rit.edu/news/story.php?id=45733 Retrieved July 24, 2015

In 2011, a campus was opened in the capital city of Zagreb, offering undergraduate degrees in information technology and international business and a graduate degree in service leadership and innovation targeting working professionals. In fall 2013, the Zagreb campus moved to 13,000 square feet of new space as part of a new commercial and residential development in Novi (New) Zagreb, an expanding area in the capital city.

“With the opening of the Zagreb campus, a decision was made to change ACMT to RIT Croatia to reflect the more substantial presence of the university. In 2015 RIT Croatia offers three undergraduate programs: International Hospitality and Service Management (Dubrovnik), International Business (Zagreb) and Information Technology (Dubrovnik and Zagreb); and one Master of Science program in Service Leadership and Innovation (Zagreb).
