Scope and Contents

The RIT College Union Board records consist mostly of administrative documents for the campus organization. Much of the collection is made up of minute books and summaries of motions brought before the board. There are also annual reports for the organization. The collection also includes a copy of the College Union Board's constitution and by-laws, approved in 1966.

Additionally, there is a file of miscellaneous items which includes membership cards (1977-1980), deposit slips, blank certificates of recognition, blank stationery, and fliers reminding students to vote for board members. There are also a few miscellaneous documents such as copies of some meeting minutes, a typed description of the organization, a small file of correspondence, and one issue of the CUB Quarterly from 1976.

The collection also includes student activities calendars (1986-1993), event fliers, and a small clippings folder. The calendars were published by the College Union Board and the event fliers are for activities sponsored by the organization.

A scrapbook for the year 1970-1971 contains posters, photographs, tickets and clippings from events during the year. The front of the scrapbook is titled by hand: "College Union Board: The Year of our Benevolence, 1970-1971."

Biographical / Historical

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) College Union Board was formed during the 1960s. In 1966, the RIT Board of Trustees and Student Council approved a constitution and set of by-laws for the organization. According to its constitution, the purpose of the group was to, "...promote better recreational, social, cultural, and educational services for the college community." The group planned to achieve its stated purpose by overseeing the newly constructed College Alumni Union. The Union was to be run by 200 students, independent of the college's administration.

Although all students at RIT were considered members of the College Union, only active members could join the board. To be an active member, a person had to be a full-time day student at the Institute and have paid the active union fee. Faculty, staff, administrators, part-time students, and evening students could become associate members, which allowed them to "have a voice" at meetings, but not vote.

The group changed its name to the College Activities Board (C.A.B.) for the 1978-1979 school year. Currently, C.A.B. is still a part of RIT's campus. The organization helps to plan and implement on-campus activities and entertainment events for the student body.
