Douglas Rea collection of ESPRIT publications

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: RITArc-0601

Scope and Contents

The Douglas Rea collection of E.S.P.R.I.T. publications is comprised of all the e.s.p.r.i.t. from 1989-2002. This includes the early newspaper editions from 1989-1990 and magazine editions from 1990-1993. Starting in 1994 digital supplements were added to the photography portfolios to include a CD, DVD, or website.

The 2002 edition of Esprit is called Zazmo. It includes the original photographs taken by students that were later used in their final project - a hexachrome six color book. Inside the book it states: By partnering with the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Zazmo, the 2002 ESPRIT project from RIT, is helping to change the fantasies of these children's imaginations into reality. As adults, it is sometimes hard to remember our childhood fantasies. Embrace Zazmo's beautiful photographs of children's super power fantasies, and recapture the essence of your childhood imagination. Children ages ten and under were asked, "If you could have a super power what would it be, and what would you do?" The answers are only limited by a child's imagination.

Biographical / Historical

Started in 1989, photojournalism chair Doug Rea initiated a student-run special interest publication which came to be known as e.s.p.r.i.t. (Electronic Still Photography at Rochester Institute of Technology), one of the first publications produced in a totally electronic environment. The publication began with a simple, “eight page newspaper based on electronic photography and the early tools of desktop publishing” (Alyce Smith). By 1994 it was printed as a magazine. Later publications became more complex including full color photography, bound copies, and some with CD / DVD supplements. Since 1994, each printed piece has been accompanied by its own website, and both the printed pieces and the websites have received international acclaim and awards.

Douglas Ford Rea is the ESORIT Project Founder and Director, and Photojournalism program chair at RIT and faculty member since 1976. Prior to that he was a professional photogrpaher. His photographic work has been exhibited extensively. Professor Rea was the founder of the Electronic Photography Lab, The Digital Studios and several digital photography classes as RIT.
