Biographical / Historical

Planning for a Student Life Center on RIT’s Henrietta Campus occurred throughout the 1980s, with a groundbreaking ceremony in 1989. In 1992, the completed Student Life Center was named in recognition of Kate Rider Andrews and Clara Louise Andrews Hale, daughters of Ezra R. Andrews and Betsy Lucelia Rider Andrews. The Andrews and Hale family's association with RIT spans four generations. Ezra Andrews was a founding trustee of Mechanics Institute who advocated for merging with the Rochester Athenaeum. Mrs. Andrews founded and served as chair of the Domestic Science Board, Clara Louise Andrews married William Barton Hale in 1891. She served as the president of the Institute's Women's Board and was a member of the Domestic Science Board. Her husband William served as Secretary of the Board of Directors. Kate Rider Andrews was a philanthropist and made a bequest to the Institute in memory of her parents.

Ezra Andrews Hale (Ezra and Betsy's grandson), was also a member of the Board of Trustees. His sister Esther Hale Gosnell Saunders served on the Institute's Domestic Science Board.
