Identifier: RITArc-0469

Scope and Contents

The collection contains eight boxes of negatives and photo prints used in the Techmila from 1988-1994. The original order was retained. Some of the photos are identified by the photographer’s name, we believe these to be student photographers working for the Techmila committee.

The remainder of the boxes (9-25) are files from Reporter Magazine and contain negatives, some photographs and corresponding issues of the magazine from 1979-2002.

Biographical / Historical

RIT Reporter is published weekly as the official student newspaper of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The purpose of this student run publication is to inform the students, faculty and staff of campus news and events. It also serves to provide practical experience for students interested in opportunities linked to their academic studies in design, illustration, photography, and printing.

Reporter began as RIT Reporter, the official publication of RIT, the Student Association and the Alumni Association. In 1951 it merged with SPRIT, a student publication, and adopted the earlier titles numbering. Reporter changed to a magazine format in January 1969. Photo editor and later editor-in-chief Bob Kiger was a driving force behind the transition of Reporter from the newspaper to magazine format. Grant Hamilton was the founding editor, with a team that included Bob Kiger, Dean Dexter, Neil Shapiro, Dave Folkman, and Jim Sutherland, and later Greg Lewis, Meredith Gould, Keith Taylor, Patti Paul, and Greg Enos. The first magazine cover photo was by Bob Kiger. Serving as faculty advisors at various times were Professors Thomas J. O'Brien, W. Frederick Craig, Dr. Mark F. Gulden, and Arthur A. Terry. Terry would regale the staff with stories of high level editorial meetings when he was picture editor and later director of layout and production at National Geographic, prior to his joining the RIT faculty.

In October of 2011 The Associated Collegiate Press awarded Reporter Magazine with a Magazine Pacemaker Award. The ACP Magazine Pacemaker award recognizes general excellence in collegiate magazines and are divided into two categories: Feature and Literary magazines. The Reporter ran weekly until it became a monthly print magazine with digital issues other weeks. Digitized past issues can be accessed at https://ritdml.rit.edu/handle/1850/3581

In 2013 the name was changed to Reporter, publishing fewer issues with digital versions found here: http://reporter.rit.edu/issues/and current articles published here: http://reporter.rit.edu Reporter is now a 32 page, full-color, magazine published monthly during the academic year by students of RIT, covering the news, events, and the zeitgeist of 18,000 college students in upstate New York.
