Historical Information: RIT 175th Anniversary Celebration

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) can trace its origins to the founding of the Rochester Athenaeum in 1829. After joining with several different Rochester institutions during the 19th century, the Athenaeum finally merged with the Mechanics Institute (founded in 1885) in 1891 to form the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI). RAMI changed its name to the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1944 to better reflect the Institute's role in the field of technical education.

In 2004, the university celebrated its 175th anniversary. Unlike the 125th and 150th anniversary celebrations, the 175th anniversary did not include a formal fundraising component. Instead, the Institute focused on activities to commemorate the university's founding. The goals of the celebration were to:
  • Advance RIT's reputation as a leading technological university
  • Enhance pride and spirit among campus constituencies
  • Build support for the capital campaign, "Powered by the Future"
