Scope and Contents

The Edward G. Dykstra collection includes seven pieces of silverware and ceramic pieces made by Mr. Dykstra and signed "Dyke", others signed by "Flora." These include:

  • Small round metal plate with hand painted rooster on
  • Tall hammered metal (gold tone) vase with wooden base
  • Large textured ceramic pot with interior white glaze
  • Small green ceramic bowl with sterling silver cover
  • Small ceramic cup with 2 covers
  • Small sterling silver box hinged with yellow and green glass top and wooden interior
  • Small sterling silver pitcher with dark wood handle.

    Biographical / Historical

    Edward G. Dykstra was a 1949 graduate of the School for American Craftsmen at Alfred University. He studied metallurgy and was a member of the Craft Club. Mr. Dykstra started Ethox Inc., a nylon manufacturing concern, in Buffalo, N.Y. Nylon is manufactured using the gas “ethlox,” hence the name of the company. Mr. Dykstra was also a lover of classic cars and owned a 1920 Moon vehicle.

    In a preparatory sketch for the flatware, there are very distinct “ridges” or “lines” as an artistic motif. These are hallmarks of Mr. Dykstra’s style and his artistic trademark.

    Born in 1920, Mr. Dykstra died on March 2, 2010 in East Aurora, N.Y. He was predeceased by his wife,>Dorothy Haxton Dykstra. They had no children.

    Overview

    The Edward G. Dykstra collection contains silverware and ceramic pieces; books and magazines about crafts, design, and silverwork; photographs of silver work and two Alfred University yearbooks. Mr. Dykstra attended the School for American Craftsmen (SAC) at Alfred University, graduating in 1948. The silver and ceramic include bowls, pitchers, plates, a vase and a box created by either Mr. Dykstra or a contemporary of his from SAC.
