Scope and Contents

The School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS) photographs contain 71- 8 x 10 inch photographs. Photos #1-6 are of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) campus buildings in the early 1970's when the campus was fairly new, as well as the Tojo Garden, a Japanese garden on campus dedicated to the memory of an RIT student from Japan. Photos #7-12 depict photography labs with stations and equipment used for testing and developing film. Photos #13-31 show students and faculty working in the labs and in a classroom setting with Professor Albert D. Rickmers. One student identified in three images is Jean Guy-Naud, who later taught at RIT.

Photos #32-60 are portraits of Navy personnel beginning in 1958 who were enrolled in the summer "United States Navy Quality Control of Photographic Processing" program, along with RIT faculty members. Photographs from 1958-1968 were taken at RIT's downtown campus located in Rochester, NY. Photographs from 1969 through the late 1980's were taken at the Henrietta campus. Many of the portraits have two copies, both black-and-white and color.

Historical Information: School of Photographic Arts and Sciences

Educating military personnel was not uncommon for the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS). Canadian and United States Armed Forces had enrolled in existing school programs during and since World War II. In 1958, the "United States Navy Quality Control of Photographic Processing" program began and continued well into the 1980's.

General

Twenty-five of the photographs are of Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) Henrietta campus Frank E. Gannett building, photography faculty and students in classrooms and working in laboratories. The remainder of the photographs are group portraits of the annual summer "United States Navy Quality Control of Photographic Processing" program for Navy personnel. Many years have a black-and-white copy and a color copy.
