Historical Information: The New York Public Interest Research Group at RIT

Organized in 1973, the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is a nonpartisan, non-profit group with chapters on 20 college campuses in New York State. NYPIRG is New York's largest student-directed research and advocacy organization. Principal areas of concern are environmental protection, consumer rights, higher education, government reform, voter registration, mass transit and public health.

Campus chapters are formed by student referendum. In 1976, one such referendum was held at RIT during Student Association elections on March 8 through 10. The measure was approved by a vote of 1,080 to 564. However, on April 2, RIT President Dr. Paul Miller turned down the request to have a NYPIRG chapter on campus.
