Historical Information: RIT's Graphic Identification System

In 1973, a graphic identity task force assessed the need for an update of RIT's graphic identification system. The task force, made up of faculty, staff, and students, concluded that a new system was needed for consistency of message, ease of use, and increased visibility and reinforcement of RIT in the community. A cohesive system would also be beneficial in the 150th Anniversary of the Institute campaign in 1977.

Helvetica was chosen as the typeface, with Pantone brown 167 and orange 165 as recommended colors. A standard identity mark and stationery were also part of the system to be used by all areas of the Institute, its communications, and publications. The updated system was approved for use by RIT President Paul Miller.
