Historical Information: Picturesque Rochester

Picturesque Rochester was an art competition beginning in 1910. The Mechanics Institute Department of Applied and Fine Arts and its superintendent, Frank von der Lancken sponsored the contest along with a local citizen. Designed to increase appreciation of the beauty of the city of Rochester, focus was particularly on areas that were in danger of disappearance due to the rapid urban development of that era. All mediums were acceptable, but entrants were advised that photographs or work of a mechanical nature would not be admitted. Entries were then reproduced in local newspapers and journals.
