Biographical / Historical

The Reading Laboratory at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was founded in 1953. Started by A. B. Herr, it was designed to provide instruction in reading and writing to children in the local community. However, the program also provided reading instruction to students in both the day and evening schools at the Institute. The purpose of the program was expanded around 1963 to include reading, writing, and study skills support services. In order to reflect the Lab's new purpose, the name was changed to the Reading and Study Clinic by 1967.

The Lab has continued to exist in several forms. The Reading and Study Clinic was replaced by the Learning Development Center (LDC) in 1974. As of 2011, LDC continued to provide valuable tutoring services to the RIT community; however, the program was renamed the Academic Support Center in 2004.
