Biographical / Historical

The Reading Laboratory at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was founded in 1953. Started by A. B. Herr, it was designed to provide instruction in reading and writing to children in the local community. Around 1967, the Lab was renamed the Reading and Study Clinic. Students at the university could visit the Clinic to find help in reading, writing, or mathematics, or to hone their study skills through either individual or group instruction. Several additional programs were added such as the College Anticipation program, College Restoration program, and a community reading clinic. The College Anticipation program was designed to help high school students in the local area prepare for college, while the College Restoration program was set-up to help students struggling in college.

The Reading and Study Clinic was replaced by the Learning Development Center (LDC) in 1974. As of 2011, the LDC, renamed the Academic Support Center in 2004, still played an important role on RIT's campus.
