Biographical / Historical

The Academic Support Center at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) can trace its origins to the founding of the Reading Laboratory in 1953. Started by A. B. Herr, the Reading Laboratory provided instruction in reading and writing to children in the local community. Around 1967, the Lab was renamed the Reading and Study Clinic. Students at the university could visit the Clinic to find help in reading, writing, and math, or to hone their study skills. As the services offered by the Clinic became more comprehensive, it was replaced by the Learning Development Center (LDC) in 1974. The LDC continued to expand its services, offering English language programs for non-native speakers and building a program for the local community. In 2004, the LDC was renamed the Academic Support Center (ASC).

As of 2011, the ASC still provided tutoring services to the students at RIT. The office continues to offer workshops, classes, and labs for reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills. According to their website, ASC's goal is to help students "improve their study techniques" and "make the most of their individual learning abilities."
