Historical Information: AAHANA

AAHANA stands for African American, Hispanic American, and Native American. The acronym was first used at Boston College in 1979 to refer to students from these three cultures. The term was introduced to replace the word minority from the university vernacular. The concern was that by using the term minority, the school was indicating that certain students were of lesser value. The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) appears to have adopted this term as early as 1992. As of 2011, the term AALANA was used at RIT in place of AAHANA. AALANA stands for African American, Latino American, and Native American.
