Biographical / Historical

The Community Service Club House (CSCH) was started at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) around 1982. It was a "Special Interest" housing option for students, supported by the university's Department of Residence Life. At the time, RIT had eight other special interest houses on its campus: Art House, Business House, Computer Science House, Engineering House, Imagemakers House, International House, Photo House, and Unity House. Students would apply to live in one of these houses, agreeing to abide by the group's constitution. Each house was coeducational and was located on one or more floors of the residence halls on campus. According to a brochure produced by the Office of Residence Life, these houses were "alternative living environment[s]" that "provid[ed] an atmosphere of spirit, pride and closeness that is scarce in normal residence hall life."

Members of CSCH were expected to participate in campus and community service activities, as well as support the CSCH and its role on campus. This was done through participating in various committees such as the evaluation committee or the student-elected executive board. Students living in CSCH would work as a group on community service projects , form teams to compete in intramural sports and activities, and organize campus events such as the annual Snow Ball. CSCH's constitution (revised 1996) lists the following purposes for the group:
  • To promote community service activities which will focus on providing direct and indirect voluntary service to the community and/or campus agencies
  • To promote supplemental social, recreational, and educational programs for members
  • To stimulate a sense of pride in group membership
  • To make members more aware of their community
  • To serve as positive role models and leaders representing RIT students in the area of campus/community service.
