Biographical / Historical

In February 1970 several departments at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) were reorganized under the newly formed Division on Instructional Development and Planning. According to one organizational chart, these departments included the Wallace Memorial Library, Computer Services, and Instructional Research and Development (IRD). Several other groups fell under the purview of these three departments. For instance, the Media Design Center (MDC), Instructional Television Center (ITV), Instructional Resource Laboratory (IRL), and Research Center were all under IRD.

In a report submitted to RIT's president in 1970, Paul A. Miller, the purpose of this new administrative structure was described as follows:

  • To coordinate and focus the instructional technologies with evaluative instructional research and development
  • To stress the place of the library as an aggressive, major learning center
  • To centralize computing activities and to provide broadly this twentieth century technology for the learning processes and the processes of administration
  • To research and to make more fruitful those teaching-learning situations central to the Institute's purpose: education.
