Scope and Contents

The James J. Granato collection contains biographical information on Granato, as well as several photographs and a diploma. The biographical sketch in the collection was written by his son, James M. Granato, in response to an article in the February 8, 1952 RIT Reporter that listed Granato as a "Lost Alumni." This RIT Reporter article is also in the collection, along with two photographs of Granato and his official Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute diploma.

Biographical / Historical

James J. Granato (1901-1981) was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada on September 25, 1901 to Agostino and Mariatonia Granato. When he was 14, his family moved to Rochester, NY where his father began working at the Bausch & Lomb Optical Company. In 1916, Granato entered a three-year electrical program at the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI). He graduated from RAMI on June 19, 1919 and decided to pursue a career in music. A professional saxophonist/clarinetist, he spent time living and working in both New York City and Chicago. Granato married twice and had two children. He died on May 22, 1981.

Diploma and photographs of James J. Granato, a graduate of the Rochester Athenaeum in 1919. The collection also includes a brief biographical sketch, written by Granato's son, James M. Granato and a copy of the RIT Reporter from 1952.
