Identifier: RITArc-0691

Scope and Contents

From the finding aid of the George H. Clark Building collection: "The cornerstone for the George H. Clark Building was laid on May 18, 1946, following the convocation exercises for that year. The ceremony was overseen by James E. Gleason, chairman of the Board of Trustees. Frank E. Gannett, founder of the Gannett media company, gave a speech on the "Significance of this Project" and Mark Ellingson, RIT's president, paid tribute to Clark. Clark then laid the cornerstone using the same silver trowel that George Eastman had used to lay the cornerstone for RIT's Eastman Building in 1900."
The silver mark on the trowel is for William Hunt & Sons. The Brades, Limited. Brades Steel Works

Biographical Information for M. Richard Rose

"M. Richard Rose assumed the presidency in 1979. [RIT president Paul] Miller and Rose shared the belief that students in a technical school should be exposed to more art, literature, philosophy and culture. Partially out of this interest, and partially due to financial difficulties, Eisenhower College became a part of RIT. The university had made attempts to increase the liberal arts and humanities curriculum. Rose helped launch RIT's first Ph.D. program, in imaging science, in 1988."
